Premier Attacks Georgia Cougars
If the first match of the 2010 season indicates anything, its that Head Coach Brian Flanagan
has assembled a team capable of scoring anyway, from anywhere, by anyone. The 6-0 win by the Dallas
Premier at University Of Alabama soccer complex in Tuscaloosa, Alabama over the Georgia cougars
showed just how capable this team is going to be this year both offensively and defensively.
Six different players scored for the Premier in a game long assault that started slow and ended
with the Georgia team wondering what train hit them. The Premier defense equaled the offensive
assault by keeping the Georgia team at bay while the Premier attack tried to get their legs under them.
In what would become a pattern for the Premier in their attack against the Georgia side, F Missy Stovall
(U Of Mobile) headed the ball nicely into the goal on a beautiful long ball from D Sarah Laughlin (Long
Island U). Several of the Premiers attacks on the Georgia goal started with balls from the back line from
the Premier defenders. Goalies Maegan Wilson and Haley Corbell easily handled anything that got by
the Premierback line. MF Kendall Juett found the back of the net with a one touch blast into the back of
the net from 12 yards out that had followed three one touch passes that started in the backline again. D
Alicia Marshall sent an outside thru ball up the line where speedy MF Kat Brenneman crossed to F
Heather Hutyra who one touched to Juett for the goal. The half ended 2-0 and the Premier in complete
control. Flanagan having to deal with a total no entry rule for this tournament, strategically substituted
for the second half. But in the Premier world, substitutions only means more of the same from this very
deep side. Marshall, once again out of the back found F Princess Haley(Florida Southern) 15 minutes into
the second half, who then found MF Mikaela Arredondo (Mary Hardin-Baylor),on a cross. Arredondo
calmly put the ball in the net for the 3-0 lead. Haley would later break through two defenders and
nutmeg the Georgia goalie for a score of her own, as would MF Britany Slyman (TCU) on a move that
had the defender and the goalie still looking for the ball. Probably the most impressive goal of the game
came on a corner kick attempt when Melinda (Bullet) Carter smartly caught the Georgia defense
napping and found Marshall standing alone at the corner of the 18 yard box. Marshall quickly sent a line
drive to the back post where MF Ashley Rape (Duke) in a head long dive headed the ball into the net. It
was an amazing effort on Rape's part.
"Well that was a good start for our first effort together, we spent about a 25 minute period time where
we were trying to get our bearings, but once that was over we did a pretty good job. The second half we
moved and possessed the ball and made them run a lot. It was real satisfying to have 6 different players
score our 6 goals. The ladies worked hard the whole game and i'm really pleased with their effort. We'll
just load up again tomorrow and try and be better." commented Head Coach Brian Flanagan.
The Premier's next game is Sunday at 5pm versus North Carolina. A win against the NC side will put the
Premier in the Regional Championship game at 9:30 am Monday morning. |
