Premier Has Jekyll and Hyde Weekend
Dallas, Tx (06/13/2010) The Dallas Premier team came home after playing in Houston disappointed and frustrated. Head Coach Brian Flanagan had assembled this team to be a high octane scoring team. All things looked good after winning the USASA Women’s Open Region III Championship where they outscored the field 11-2 in three games and the only thing that slowed them down were the wet muddy conditions. A game with similar conditions followed and Houston South Select tied the Premier 1-1 after being out shot 19-5. Finding the net was the problem or a least that was what seemed to be the problem. The Premier looked to their Home Opening weekend with anticipation and excitement. They would be facing Oklahoma division rivals Oklahoma Alliance and Tulsa Spirit at their new venue UTD.
Once again the Premier came away frustrated in a 1-0 loss on Saturday night to the Alliance. Good opportunities were negated either by bad touches or great goalie saves by Alliance goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire and for the first time in the Dallas Premiers two year history they had a loss in league play. This high octane team was running on empty and frustration had really set in. They needed an answer and they needed it fast. Any thing other than a win against Tulsa on Sunday would have serious repercussions to repeating as Big Sky South Champs. They seemed to be just inches off and the goals weren’t there. The inches they were off wasn’t on the field it was the 6 inches between their ears that was the problem. It was their decision before Sunday’s game against Tulsa to fix the problem. With Coach Flanagan making major line up adjustments the message was clear to fix this. The Premier took personal responsibility for its play and decided its time to do this right. That was bad news for Tulsa. It wouldn’t have matter who it was on this day. The Premier sent the message to those who doubted them…..Dallas 9 Tulsa 0. This was an entire team effort, early attempts went awry but this teams attitude was different, they had closed the six inches they were off and they just kept coming. Erin Scott broke the ice in the 21st minute for the 1-0 lead and then came the spark that would ignite the blast as Coach Flanagan inserted defender Emily Simon in at Forward for the first time. Simon scored two goals in three minutes and a 3-0 halftime lead. The second half was even more devastating as Scott scored another goal and Princess Haley equaled Scotts 2 goals herself. Heather Hutyra seem to be setting everyone up as she tallied 3 assists and then decided to add insult to injury by scoring herself. Sterling Smith contributed a goal and an assist. Then came what would become the bad new for the evening. Leading 8-0 and in the 90th minute, Ginny Rosario-Hall placed a corner kick to the back post where the hard working defender turned forward Emily Simon, just like the rest of the team, giving her all to last second of the game, made a flying horizontal stab at the ball for her 3rd goal of the night only to land awkwardly, shattering her ankle. The last goal of the night reflected the Premier’s new found attitude of working hard every second no matter what the cost. Simon’s ankle will require surgery and for any that may wonder if this will keep her down the answer is the same that the team gave today to all those who thought Saturday’s loss would keep the Premier down. |
